3 New Year's Resolutions for Your Nonprofit Website

The new year is a perfect time to make some changes. Besides going to the gym more and eating less sugar (which you’re totally going to succeed at... right?), why not make some resolutions around your website?

At EveryAction, we believe in setting goals that are achievable. Here are some new year’s resolutions that anyone can accomplish.

Repeat them slowly, print them out, put them on your office wall, and check back with us throughout the year to let us know how you’re doing.

New Call-to-action

#1 “I will articulate clear goals and objectives for my website.”

It’s hard to make any kind of improvement to your website without first knowing what you’re trying to achieve.

Do you want to raise awareness for a cause? Do you want to develop more online fundraising? Do you want to build engagement with your membership? Something else?

Be clear about your goals and choose success metrics that you can actually measure.


#2 “I will have a clear picture of my target audience.”

Once you have identified the purpose of your website, you’ll want to spend some time drilling down to a few key target audiences.

“The general population” or “Males 24-35” don’t count as audience segments.

Be specific about the people you want to reach and create actual personas to describe that person’s motivations. The better you can understand what motivates your audience, the better you can serve them quality content that interests them.


#3 “I will know what actions I want my audience to take.”

If you don’t know what action your visitors are supposed to take, how can you expect them to know?

Once you have a clear understanding of what motivates your visitors and the objectives of the website, start to better define calls to action. When X visitor comes to Y page, what actions am I trying to get them to take?  

Even if you think you’ve already figured these 3 resolutions out, take the time to go through the exercise again.

Your audience, organization, and website is constantly changing and there may be new goals or new opportunities with existing visitors that you didn’t think of before.
