7 End-of-Year Tips for Saying Thank You to your Donors

Elliot Rysenbry

In the nonprofit world, donors are essential.

And at the end of the year, after all of the fundraising and cold calling and calling-to-action, it's important to express appreciation for the supporters that are so instrumental in keeping your organization moving forward (and if we're honest, keeping the lights on!)

A standard thank you is always nice, but going the extra mile to show your donors how much they mean to you can pay out dividends down the road.

Here some tips you can use to thank your donors and let them know how grateful you are for their support.

Make a Call ASAP

After receiving a significant donation, make sure to call the donor as soon as possible.

If you do it quickly, they’ll feel like an appreciated and important part of your movement - and they’ll be much more likely to give again.

Write a personalized greeting card

Something as simple as a handwritten note can go a long way. It shows thought, care and investment in your donors - and it provides a lasting reminder of how important their gift is.

You can also use a card as an opportunity to encourage a secondary gift, or perhaps further giving down the road.

Send a newsletter showing what your donors' support can do

A newsletter is a great way to deliver concrete, real stories illustrating how invaluable your donors support is for the work you do.

Making your donors the hero of the story makes them feel good about past donations, and makes a case for future giving.

Invite major donors to an event

Invite your donors to a free social event, such as a happy hour, barbecue, or launch party for a new initiative.

Establishing a close, personal relationship with your best donors will keep them coming back, and make them feel included in your organization and vital to your mission.

Make a video

A video can be a creative and engaging way to reach out to donors. A video is a great way to tell the story of your mission, your current projects, and your need for support in a way that is emotive and personal.

Send donors a small gift for the holidays

A small token of appreciation like cookies and other treats shows your donors gratitude for their continued support. The holiday season is a time of giving, so give a little something back to those who give so much to you!

Give a shout out on social media

Recognizing donors and supporters who interact with you on social media is a great (and free!) way to show to your appreciation and make your social media presence personal.

Social media is about conversing not broadcasting, so spread the love - everyone enjoys a good boost on social media!

Whatever method you decide to use, the most important thing is that the sentiment is genuine.

Relationships between donors + nonprofits can often feel impersonal, so a personalized, sincere thank you will help build a strong relationship with your supporters, and make future gifts more likely.
